Background of the Study
In Nigeria, religious leaders play a pivotal role in shaping social values, norms, and community dynamics. In areas like Fagge LGA in Kano State, where religious tensions and political conflicts often intersect, religious leaders have the potential to either perpetuate or mitigate violence. Historically, religious leaders in Nigeria have been central figures in mediating disputes, promoting harmony, and influencing public opinion. In Fagge LGA, which has a diverse religious population, religious leaders often serve as intermediaries in conflict situations, offering spiritual guidance, community-based solutions, and peacebuilding efforts. However, the effectiveness of religious leaders in peacebuilding is still a topic of debate.

This study aims to appraise the role of religious leaders in peacebuilding in Fagge LGA, assessing how their involvement in mediation, advocacy, and community outreach can contribute to reducing violence and promoting social cohesion. Given the ethnic and religious diversity in the area, religious leaders may also act as critical agents of dialogue, fostering interfaith understanding and collaboration. This study will explore the successes, challenges, and limitations of religious leadership in peacebuilding in Fagge.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of religious leaders in fostering peace in communities, there is a lack of empirical research on the effectiveness of their involvement in peacebuilding in areas like Fagge LGA. In a region marked by interreligious tensions and communal violence, it is important to understand the extent to which religious leaders can mediate conflicts and contribute to sustainable peace. This study will explore the challenges faced by religious leaders in peacebuilding efforts and propose strategies for enhancing their role in conflict resolution.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of religious leaders in peacebuilding in Fagge LGA.

  2. To evaluate the challenges faced by religious leaders in promoting peace in a conflict-prone region.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of religious leaders in peacebuilding in Fagge LGA.

Research Questions

  1. What role do religious leaders play in peacebuilding in Fagge LGA?

  2. What challenges do religious leaders face in their efforts to promote peace in Fagge LGA?

  3. How can the effectiveness of religious leaders in peacebuilding be enhanced in Fagge LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Religious leaders in Fagge LGA play a significant role in promoting peace and resolving conflicts in their communities.

  2. Religious leaders face challenges such as lack of resources, interfaith tensions, and political interference in their peacebuilding efforts.

  3. Strengthening the capacity of religious leaders will enhance their effectiveness in peacebuilding in Fagge LGA.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on religious leaders in Fagge LGA, Kano State, between 2010 and 2025. It will involve interviews, surveys, and document analysis. Limitations include potential biases in responses from religious leaders due to their vested interests in peacebuilding efforts.
